Reliability Activities

Reliability can be an important issue at throughout the product life cycle. There is no single products life cycle suitable for all products but reliability activities in a typical life cycle are shown in following table:

Life cycle stage Reliability activity
Contract discussions Correct identification and definition of relevant reliability targets.
Outline design Simple reliability calculations to ensure that design concept is feasible.
Detailed design Full reliability model of proposed system, including realistic maintenance assumptions. Frequently making use of a reliability simulation.
Manufacture and installation None.
Testing / handover Review of proposed test plan and results to ensure that RBD/Fault Trees reflect system capability. Reliability demonstration that product specifications have been met.
Use Development of a maintenance plan to ensure that the maintenance assumptions are met.
Repair Collection and analysis of data from failed components to check and refine failure models.
Disposal None.
